Salix alba - clone 68/53/1 and Salix nigra - clone 0408 were exposed to elevated concentrations of Cd, Cd+Ni, Cd+Pb-EDTA and Cd+Ni+Pb-EDTA, each in two concentrations (1OE-4M/l and 10E-5M/l) in water culture solutions. Over 200 mg Cd/kg dry weight were determined in shoots and leaves. Presence of Ni inhibited the uptake and translocation of Cd. Since Pb was chelated with EDTA, similar antagonistic uptake effect in the presence of Pb-EDTA was less expressed. Competition of Cd, Ni and Pb to same metal transporters and carriers is the probable cause of the detected antagonism. Investigated genotypes have considerable potential in remediation of areas polluted with moderate Cd concentrations.
