Inheritance and molecular markers development initiation for resistance to bacterial blight in cotton

The study was conducted to investigate resistance in purified synthetic tetraploid resistant lines, estimate heritability and genetic advance of resistance, initiate resistance transfer to the commercial varieties and initiate development of molecular markers linked to the resistance to be used in marker assisted breeding for resistance to bacterial blight. Quantitative analysis indicated that additive genetic effect is the major contributor to the genotypic variation observed in the crosses of the resistant synthetic lines and susceptible cultivars and also indicated that the dominance component was in the direction of susceptibility. Estimates of number of effective resistance factors indicate the presence of two factors conditioning the resistance. Chi square test revealed that the resistance of synthetic lines is controlled by one partially dominant gene. Broad sense heritability estimates were high (0.50) for all crosses in the two seasons. These high broad sense heritability values were coupled with high genetic advance values indicating that the selection for the resistance would be effective. Recurrent backcross coupled with self- pollination was used to transfer the resistance to the commercial cultivars Barakat- 90 and Barac (67) B. Resistant backcross plants were comparable to their recurrent parents in fiber quality traits. No polymorphism due to the resistance was detected using 19 RAPD primers.
