Assessment of production technologies on wheat and faba bean in the river nile state
2008
Mohammad, H.S.
The study aimed to assess the impact of improved production technologies on the major winter crops (wheat & fababean) in the river Nile state The study objectives are to investigate the adoption rate and impact of improved production technologies on the main winter crops in the River Nile State in the Sudan. It also aims to identify constraints and to suggest suitable solutions to enhance the adoption of these improved technologies a survey was conducted in the River Nile State. The survey covered two schemes; namely Al Aliab and Al Zeidab in addition to Shendi area. The primary data was collected through structured questionnaire. Secondary data was collected from relevant sources. The researcher used random sampling technique to select the sample. Data was analyzed using descriptive statistics (means, frequencies,) and covered socioeconomics characteristics of farmers in the area of study. In order to assess the impact of improved production technologies of wheat and fababean, sampled farmers were classified into participants and non-participants. The descriptive analysis showed that farmers in this area were aware about improved production technologies and their positive role in agricultural development. However, they were encountered by constraints in adopting these packages such as farm size, labor availability, technology inputs and finance problems. Results of the analysis showed the impact of improved production technologies of wheat and fababean at the farm level. Gross benefits (GB) and marginal rate of return (MRR) were computed. In the case of wheat, the net return for adopters was higher than net return for non-adopters by 24.5% and the MRR was about (942.9 %). Whereas, in the case of fababean the net return for adopters was higher than net return for non-adopters by 12% and the MRR was about (19.18 %). The policy implications were the following: 1.Strength extension services and dissemination of technologies through demonstration plots and field days. This also implies strengthening the linkage between researchers, extension works and farmers. 2. Provision of formal credit in cash and kind in adequate quantities and at suitable time. 3. Improved infra-structure such as transportation, markets and storages to obtain good prices for crops. 4.Availability of Inputs to the farmers at markable prices, 5.Solve the problems of irrigation water and make it available in suitable time and by reasonable costs, through solving the problems of electricity and fuel 6.Give farmers information about herbicides and pesticides, and how to apply them, and make them available at suitable cost. 7. Socioeconomics assessment should be carried out before the approval the new technologies
