A field trial was conducted at Hudeiba Research Station Farm during the winter season of 2006/07 to evaluate the efficacy and selectivity of Habib 72 % SL, a new formulation of 2, 4-D, for the control of broad-leaved weeds in wheat. Wheat cultivar, Wadi El Neil was planted on the 2nd week of November 2006. The herbicide, Habib (2, 4-D amine salt) was tested at 0.6 and 0.45 kg a.i./fed. The herbicide was supported, at the two rates, with one hand-weeding five weeks after sowing. 2, 4-D (as counterpart), weeded and unweeded treatments were included for comparison. Habib at 0.6 kg a.i /fed displayed excellent control of broad- leaved weeds early and late in the season. However, its activity against grassy weeds was very poor. Data on weed control collected at 6 and 9 weeks after sowing showed that 99% of the broad-leaved weeds were killed by the herbicide. The herbicide significantly reduced weeds dry weight as compared to the unweeded control. The herbicide also significantly increased wheat grain yield and 1000-seed weight. Although the differences among treatments in total biological yield and straw yield were not significant, their results followed a similar trend of the grain yield. Supplementing the rates of the herbicide with one hand- weeding resulted in good control of grasses as compared to the herbicide alone, but it was not reflected on grain yield
