The dominant purpose of river regulation in Slovak republic, as well as in other countries in Europe, was to achieve an ideal technical solution and eliminate the negative effect of natural hydrologic and morphologic processes and contribute to better achievement in rivers exploatation. Setting up the main accent on technical solution of river modifications, together with the level of knowledge in this time led tot to absence of ecological aspects. The expansion of industry and agriculture together with increasing of urbanization caused degradation of living conditions for many of aquatic organisms. At present time the most of water quality indicators are improving in Slovak rivers. New technology, legislative arrangements caused improvement of chemical and microbiological qualitative parameters but they do not lead to improvement of ecological quality. River modifications influence changes in morphology of streams and also caused changes in composition of ichtyofauna. The article is focused on problems of relation between the river morphology parameters and character of ichtyofauna in researched reach of river Poprad.
