The paper presents a retrospective analysis of the major breeding achievements in the area of remote hybridization in fruit species. The scientific and applied contributions of the breeders who laid the foundations of interspecific and intergenus hybridization in fruit-growing, such as Burbank and Michurin, were pointed out. The reasons necessitating the application of the remote hybridization method and the use of the breeding results into science and practice were analyzed. The research achievements in that same research area of prominent scientists such as Chandler, Zhukovsky, Kursakov, Janick, Moore, and many others, were discussed. The role of remote hybridization for discovering and confirming the genetic origin of a number of hybrid genes of fruit species, such as domestic plum, common sour cherry, violet apricot, etc., was underlined The perspectives for the development of remote hybridization, related to the greater opportunities for enriching specific, form and cultivar diversity among the fruit species, were outlined.
