The paper presents a brief analysis of activities aimed at the arrangement of multi-purpose use and protection of water resources in the Republic of Belarus, ways of the improvement of now operating and the development of new principles and methods of estimation of water object conditions, ecological normalization of all kinds of anthropogenic impacts and elaboration of proposals for efficient use of water resources based on GIS-technologies. The water multi-purpose use and protection patterns represent the systematized research data and design developments of the present-day conditions, future development of multi-purpose use and protection of water resources, control of harmful effects of water. The patterns are important elements of planning the water management and are based on a basin principle of water resource management prevailing today in the world water-economic practice. An efficient management of water resources requires a number of factors to be considered and analyzed, and also the availability of the results of the analysis to interested bodies and persons from state institutions and public organizations. It is impossible to generalize and analyze a considerable amount of data available because of their geographical, structural and departmental differentiation without the advanced approaches applied with the use of GIS-technologies. The world practice uses geo information systems as the most universal tool for solving the problems of planning and efficient management of natural recourses providing the data input, storage, access and processing, analysis and output of the information available of the environment conditions. The expansions of the geo information system in the water recourse management will allow the integration of various information system based on the uniform methodological and technological approaches, creation of a corporate information service to support the solution of administration problems at different levels, to provide rapid, high-performance and vivid representation of the information, and also to solve many creative problems.
