In the conditions of the Republic of Belarus there was studied the dependence of protein content in grain of winter rye (Secale cereale) on agronomic characters including the dynamics of grain filling. There were studied 7 tetraploid and 8 diploid winter rye varieties at the phase of grain filling. As a result of the realized research there was revealed an influence of a speed of dry matter accumulation in grain on protein content. Among high yielding released and promising varieties of winter rye there were observed essential distinctions in dynamics grain filling. In the favorable for grain filling years during the milky-wax ripeness period of grain there was marked an increase of crude protein content on 1.02-2.31%. In the unfavourable for grain filling years only in some varieties there was marked an increase of crude protein content (Lota; Zarnitsa; Niva). There were observed considerable varietal differences according to protein content in dry matter, and also per 1000 grains and per 1 ear. There was revealed a number of dependences during some periods of grain filling between the indices of protein content (in a dry matter; per 1000 grains and 1 ear) and the morphological characteristics (ear length; quantity of grains; weight of 1000 grains), and also the speed of water-yielding capacity and grain filling. In a group of tetraploid varieties the highest protein content in dry matter in grain excelled the varieties, which formed small grains and showed fast grain filling speed. High-protein diploid varieties, on the contrary, in the process of formation of small weight of 1000 grains showed slow filling speed.
