The effect of two different training systems, the Solax system and standard slender spindles, on the vigour of apple trees and their fruiting was evaluated during the years 2004-2009. The following 17 cultivars were used: Angola, Ariane, Braeburn, Fuji BC2, Fuji Nagafu N8, King Jonagold, Meteor, Rubens, Rubin, Rubinola, Rubinstep, Rucla, Selena, Silvia, Sampion, Topaz and Vysocina. Trees on the M 9 rootstock were planted in spacing 3.6 x 1.5 m. Fifteen trees from each combination of tree training and cultivar were evaluated. In comparison with slender spindles, the use of the Solax system led to worse vigour in the majority of cultivars, to the reduction in canopy volume (more than 50% on average) and higher yield efficiency (by about one third on average). Yield increase was the most remarkable in cv. Rubinstep, Ariane, Meteor and Selena. On the other hand, the productivity of Rubin trees was higher when using slender spindles. Selena trees trained in the Solax system had the highest yields converted to the unit of orchard area. They were followed by Meteor, Jonagold and Rubinola trees. When using slender spindles, the cv. Sampion was the most productive one.
