The Tables of forage feed value for the Alpine space are an instrument for farmers to estimate the feeding value of their forages. Vegetative stage has a crucial impact on nutrient and energy content of grassland forages. To examine this fact the data set was statistically analysed and results of a large research project (in situ-degradability of fresh grass in the rumen) were included in the present paper. The widely used Feed intake prediction equation for dairy cows is briefly characterized. Model calculations were performed with an Austrian software application to investigate the influence of different grassland diets and forage qualities on feed intake of dairy cows at varying milk yields.
