High-yielding cows consume more feed having higher energy density than cows producing less milk. Greater feed intake results in a more rapid passage from the rumen and a reduced nutrient digestibility, particularly in the rumen. Lowered fermentation gas and urine energy losses at high intakes and a moderate shift of digestion to the small intestine partly compensate for the decline in digestibility. The Society of Nutrition Physiology added extra energy per kg milk to account for lower diet energy concentration when milk yield increases. Catabolic processes in high-yielding dairy cows, strong between-animal variation and external factors make exact specifications difficult.
