Effect of certain agriculural practices on infesting of broccoli plants with certain homopterous insects at Minia El-Kamh district, sharkia governorate, Egypt

The present investigation aimed to study the effects of some broccoli varieties (Sakura, TRI-5112 and Cleopatra), different rates of potassium sulphate during two successive seasons in 2007/2008 and 2008/2009 and certain components (protein, carbohydrate and pH values) on the infestation with different insect species viz., aphids, leafhoppers and whitefly. The experiment was carried out at Minia El-Kamh district, Sharkia Governorate, East Delta, Egypt. The obtained results showed pronounced differences in the population density of preceding pests as influenced by the aforementioned agricultural practices. The tested broccoli varieties can be arranged descending according to the level of infestation with insect pests as follows: Sakura, TRI-5112 and Cleopatra. Chemical analysis showed a positive relationship between broccolis sap contents of protein and carbohydrate and whitefly, leafhoppers and aphids Infestation. Inverse relationship between pH values and homopterous insect's infestation. Negative relationship between insect infestation and quantity of yield as well as spear diameter was also recorded. Therefore, using potassium sulphate at the rat of 200 kg/feddan along with the most tolerant plant variety (Cleopatra) could be recommended through an integrated pest management program of broccoli plantation.
