Feeding of European quails during the breeding phase in captivity has not been widely studied. There are in the market specific breeding feed for game quail of which composition, nutritive characteristics and price are different, so the aim of this study was to determine the influence of type of feed on the growth rate and final weight of European quail chicks in the breeding phase. We followed traditional patterns of management and production of chicks in a game quail farm. We compared two first age feed: F1 (27.4% CP, 5.4% CF and 0.36% Met.) and F2 (28.0% CP, 4% CF and 0.5% Met.). The chicks were weighed at birth and at 7, 15, 21 and 30 days of age. We calculated the average daily gain (ADG) during the breeding phase for the two types of quail feed.The average weight of chicks at birth was 6.85 +/- 0.31 g. and at 4 weeks of 74.62 +/- 4.83 g. The ADG of the birds was 2.26 +/- 0.47 g. F1 feed produced significantly less growth of chicks of group 1 during the first two weeks of their life, ADG of the chicks of the group 2 in this period came to 2.08 +/- 0.54 g., while the group 1 was 1.96 +/- 0.26 g. The lower content of methionine of F1 may be a cause of the worst growth of the animals in group 1 in the first two weeks of life. The highest crude fat content of F1 could explain the weight gain of the birds in the second two weeks of life. The mortality of chicks was higher in animals fed with the F1 in the first two weeks of life.
