The teat hyperkeratosis is a problem present in many of the farms studied. It was found that many risk factors involved in the onset of this problem are present at the farms visited. Factors related to characteristics of animals such as, the stage of lactation, the number of lactations and even the physical characteristics of the teat, like their shape and position, are shown to be associated with hyperkeratosis observed. Sharp and round teats are more prone to hyperkeratosis, than the flat and inverted ones. The front teats (3,12+/-2,16) also showed greater predisposition to hyperkeratosis of the rear teats (2,70+/-1,97).
