High level agricultural education, research, and extension in Ethiopia started in the early 1950's with the establishment of the Imperial Ethiopian College of Agricultural and Mechanical Arts at Jimma and later at Alemaya. In the early years, the College was nationally responsible for agricultural instruction, research, and extension. Of these threefunctions, instruction has received the highest priority. Although the College started with General Agriculture curriculum it gradually developeda program in which its students could major in different disciplines of agriculture. In recent years higher agricultural education in Addis Ababa University has taken additional dimensions with the establishment of the Debre Zeit and Awassa Junior Colleges of Agriculture and the Graduate Program at Alemaya. Most professional agriculturalists in Ethiopia are graduates of the College of Agriculture at Alemaya. The paper analyses the achievements and challenges in higher agricultural education in Addis Ababa University by examining instructions, research, extension, and regional development The Alemaya College of Agriculture played significant national role in the establishment phases of the current national agricultural research and extension systems of Ethiopia. Strategies for more active involvement of the higher agricultural institutions in regional development are discussed in the paper.
