Carefully selected mechanization technology can significantly contribute to the achievement of the objective of self-sufficiency in food production through intensification and expansion of agriculture. Two mechanization options based on Judicious mix of animal and mechanical power have been suggested for intensification of agriculture on producers' cooperatives and through service cooperatives on individual farms. For expansion of agriculture in tsetse-infested areas, greater dependence on large tractor-based mechanization is anticipated in the initial stages. But in the long run a more versatile combination of a four-wheel-drive medium tractor and a small tractor is considered more advantageous, even. in tsetse-infested areas.
