Evaluation of the wood structure and physical properties of Latvian soft deciduous trees (common aspen, grey alder, black alder) and their inter-species hybrids (hybrid aspen, hybrid alder) | Latvijas mīksto lapu koku (parastā apse, baltalksnis, melnalksnis) un to starpsugu hibrīdu (hibrīdapse, hibrīdalksnis) koksnes struktūras un fizikālo īpašību izvērtējums

The aim of the study was to extend the knowledge about some softdeciduous tree species, namely, grey alder (Alnus incana (L.) Moench), black alder (Alnus glutinosa (L.) Gaertn) and common aspen (Populus tremula L.), which are rather wide spread in Latvia, but not investigated adequately from the viewpoint of wood structure and physical properties. In the study, data on the anatomical parameters of wood (annual ring width, vessel number, dimensions and proportions) and physical properties (density, swelling, anisotropy and UV (350 mm) induced colour changes) were obtained. Sample trees were taken in different Latvian regions, but the average values of the obtained results did not show any essential wood distinctions depending on the tree provenance site. To evaluate within-stem distribution, all parameters of interest were estimated at four stem heights.
