Wildlife management and food security: the case of bandicoots in Papua New Guinea
2010
Cornelio, D.L., Papua New Guinea Univ. of Technology (Papua New Guinea)
The importance and threats of wildlife resources in Melanesia are widely recognized. Hence, their appropriate use is critical to achieve sustainable development in the country. The taxonomy, morphology, habitat, and reproductive characteristics of the family Peroryctidae (bandicoots) are succinctly described to elucidate the species potential in continuous controlled harvests, as results of their farming were until now unsuccessful with few exceptions. The proposed conservation of these species will also contribute to the conservation of ecosystems, improve rural livelihoods and diminish country dependence on imported processed sources of protein.
