Combined rice particle thresher-corn sheller
2010
The average threshing capacity of the developed machine was 341.53 kg/ha compared with 30 kg/ha and 50 kg/ha for traditional manual practice and pedal/motorized threshing, respectively. In terms of man-days, the technology saved 10-19 man-days per hectare compared to the traditional manual threshing practice and the pedal/motorized thresher. More than 93% of farmers involved in the performance testing confirmed that the developed technology performed better than the other two methods of threshing. Economics of using the machine showed a return on investment (ROI) of about 156% with a payback period of 0.64 year for 20 days of operation per year. Potential net benefits per year using the combined machine was Php. 57,713 compared to only Php. 21,249 if doing threshing operation only. Cost of the machine with engine was approximately Php. 37,000. More than 86% of the farmer-cooperators were willing to acquire the machine if financially cable and 100% were willing to rent it for threshing and shelling. All the farmer-cooperators cited convenience in operation and less operating costs compared to the threshing methods as the advantages of the developed machine. Additional advantages include potential additional income from machine custom hiring and its mobility appropriate for small-hold farms such as in the Ilocos areas [Philippines]. Its limitations include need for financing support for the initial investment costs, only limited areas were tested for its performance, particularly in corn shelling, and the required skills to operate and manufacture the technology.
