Use of biopesticides in organic stringbean production

The population of leafhoppers was moderately high but 120-170 insects/10 plants. The plants sprayed with the combined extracts of kangkong (Ipomoea aquatica) and hot pepper (Capsicum annuum) had significantly least number of leafhoppers, which was about 24.11% less than those observed in the untreated plants. Spraying of organic soap + hot pepper and kakawate (Gliricidia sepium) also significantly reduced leafhopper population by 20%. Likewise, treatments of EYCO [egg yolk + oil] + hot pepper and fish emulsion + hot pepper decreased the leafhopper population significantly by 14% and 17.64%, respectively. The number and weight of marketable pods were significantly influenced by the treatment applications as well as yields. Highest yields of 7.69 t/ha, 7.59 t/ha, and 7.33 t/ha were harvested from plants sprayed with kakawate + hot pepper, EYCO + hot pepper, and kangkong + hot pepper, respectively. In the following verification trial, kakawate + hot pepper and EYCO + hot pepper further proved to be effective in reducing leafhopper, whiteflies, and aphids population. However, EYCO-+-hot pepper extract was significantly more effective in decreasing whiteflies and aphids population (69.2% and 95.8%, respectively). This was an indication that aphids and whiteflies were susceptible to EYCO. Spotted beetle population was very minimal. Still, fish emulsion + hot pepper and EYCO + hot pepper significantly reduced the insect population.
