Improvement of salt tolerance in sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) by presowing seed treatment with thiamin
2007
Kanwal, R.
The present study was conducted to determine the influence of thiamin application as pre-sowing seed treatment on sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) plants grown under salt stress and to assess whether thiamin could be effective in mitigating the adverse effects of salinity on the plants subjected to salt stress. The achenes of two sunflower cultivars i.e., FH-37 and FH-106 were given a pre-sowing thiamin treatment by soaking in 0, 50, 160 and 150 mg L-1 levels of thiamin for 8 hr. The seeds were sown in plastic pots filled with sand and were irrigated every seventh days with a full strength Hoagland's nutrient solution. The plants were subjected to two different salinity treatments i.e., control and 120 mM after 22 days of germination. The data for various growth, photosynthetic, biochemical and yield parameters were collected and the concentration of mineral ions such as Na+, Cl- and K+ was determined. It was observed that salinity significantly reduced all growth and photos
