The catalytic converter chanels construction influence on diesel particulate filters (DPF) functioning parameters

Need to reduce pollution caused by internal combustion engines has become a contemporary goal with major influence on climate change and pollution on human health. In terms of emissions is found that emissions from spark ignition engines have levels of pollutants (CO, CO2, NOx, HC) greater than those caused by compression ignition engines but the Diesel engine have a major disadvantage of to issue a large volume of emissions of unburned particles form. Reducing emissions of unburned particles matter is achieved through using a diesel particulate filter (DPF - Diesel Particle Filter), whose construction is based on a network of channels provided with a catalytic substrate that once made reducing emission levels and retain existing particles in soot or unburned hydrocarbons. The lifetime of such catalytic converters depends on the time in which flow channels converter choke. A greater pressure drop between the channel input and output leads to particulate agglomeration by the rear entrance of the channel causing a formation of agglomerations of large layer thicknesses. Greater thickness of deposit layer and its uniformity throughout the channel length decrease the efficiency of heat regeneration. It is therefore necessary structural shape optimization of catalytic converter channels to determine the most effective form of diesel particulate filters constructive function. This paper presents a way to achieve this study by computer simulation using simulation environment BOOST.
