Insufficient agricultural mechanisation of family farms is a serious constraint to the intensity of agricultural production. Family farms in southern Kosovo generally lack the necessary agricultural machinery. In this region, arable soils account for 17.57% of the total agricultural land, with the rest of the land being covered with forests, meadows and grasslands along the edges of Mt. Šar. There are high variations in the level of use of single- and tandem-axle tractors on farms not only across municipalities but also across villages within their borders. Some villages still lack tractors, and use horse power for land cultivation. Of the total number of tractors, 14.28% are single-axle tractors mostly used to cut upland meadows and grasslands and less so for soil cultivation. On family farms, tandem-axle tractors typically cultivate up to 14.59 ha of agricultural land on average. The conditional power input of the farms surveyed is 2.05 kW/ha on average. A family farm owns 1.14 attachable units on average, i.e. 2.67 per tractor.
