In this paper the effect of high temperature treatment on beech wood has been analyzed. Samples dimensioned to be 20 x 20 x 20 mm were divided into two groups: sapwood and false heartwood and after that treated at temperatures of 190 deg C and 210 deg C during 8 h. Density, density loss, mass loss, tangential and radial swelling and absorption of wood were determined. The results indicate that the greatest density and mass losses were identified at the temperature of 210 deg C, whereas at the temperature of 190 deg C there is a considerable mass loss but density loss is minor. Also, at the temperature of 190 deg C there is no considerable difference in the density of sapwood and heartwood which could contribute to the increase in the scope of usage of the wood of false heartwood. The heat treatment considerable contributes the decrease of swelling where the percentage of decrease radial swelling lower then tangential swelling. This case is more expressed in the sapwood. Given data shows that untreated and heat treated false heartwood have lower absorption then sapwood. The correlation of the study properties of wood was also analysed.
