This study provided the first insight into genetic distance relationships between the Yugoslav Shepherd Dog and selected dog breeds based upon analysis of molecular genetic markers. The Yugoslav Shepherd Dog was most closely related to the Golden Retriever by genetic distance analysis, with the next most related breeds being the Caucasian Shepherd, Hovawart and Siberian Husky. Considering the positions of the Golden Retrievers, Caucasian Shepherd and Hovawart within the system of genetic classification of dog breeds, these results indicate that the Yugoslav shepherd Dog has probably divergent at essentially the same time as majority of currently recognized canine breeds. Nevertheless, the close genetic relatedness to the Siberian Husky provides support for further investigation into phylogenetic relationships between the Yugoslav Shepherd Dog and breeds of ancient origin. The polymorphism information content (PIC) was smallest for the locus PEZ03 (0.48) and largest for PEZ12 (0.82), with a high average value of 0.66. This study also investigated the panel of 10 markers as a tool for parentage testing in population of the Yugoslav Shepherd Dogs. In summary, the results of first molecular genetic analysis of the Yugoslav Shepherd Dog showed high genetic variability in the breed. In addition, to the insight into genetic structure and genetic relationships of the breed, this study also provided support for practical application of the microsatellite markers analyzed to parentage testing and individual identification in the Yugoslav Shepherd Dog Sharplaninac breed.
