Maintenance of genetic variability, which ensures the stability and survival of biodiversity through the selection work is very important in order to maintain and increase the value of genetic resources. Requirements for commercial production of vegetable plants have led to major erosion of genetic diversity and reduced overall biodiversity. A large number of populations that once constituted the backbone of vegetable production are fully retired and disappeared from the production area. They can only be found in the collections of the Institute. Priorities in the work have been determined on the basis of previous experience in dealing with genetic resources and literature in this area, especially the old sources. The most important vegetable species for further work are Allium legumes, cabbage, leafy vegetables, Cucurbitacae , fruity vegetables . Old local varieties and populations in vegetable regions grown by producers dealing with these work for generations have been noted, registered and collected. On farm storage turned out to be the most effective for most vegetable species. Current production systems of highly valuable vegetable products demand the return to traditional species and populations. That makes notification, collection, studying and preservation of genetic resources in Serbia.
