Typical fire blight symptoms were observed during 2007 on hawthorn in region of Sjenica, area with high level attitude (over 1000 m). First symptoms were recorded in late spring and early summer and appeared as shoots, blossom and leaves blight. Levan type non fluorescent colonies developed on nutrient agar enriched with sucrose (SNA) after 3 days growth on 26 deg C. Investigated strains elict HR in tobacco leaves and caused necrosis of inoculated immature pear fruits (cv. Viliams) followed by abudant oozing, typical characteristics of Erwinia amylovora. Presence of E. amylovora in diseased hawthorn samples were confirmed using IF and BIOLOG tests (0,74-0,95). Gelatin, catalase and VP tets were positive while negative results were recorded in oxidase, esculin, starch, TWEEN 80 and MR tests. Investigated strains growth at 34 deg C and in medium with 5% NaCl; growth is not recorded at 36 deg C and in medium with 7% NaCl. Obtained results show that shoots, blossom and leaves blight of hawthorn is caused by E. amylovora and it is first report of this bacterium on high level attitude (over 1000 m) in Serbia. Differences among the isolates from hawthorn and from apple and pear as well as check strain CFBP 1430 were not observed.
