Differences in seed proteins among high-protein soybean genotypes

Forty soybean genotypes developed at the Institute for Field and Vegetable Crops in Novi Sad (Serbia) were used in the study: Nine of them were newly developed genotypes, and one standard cultivar from each maturity groups 0,I,II and III. The protein content of the most tested new soybean genotypes (except KO5319) in all maturity groups was significantly higher as compared to the normal seed protein cultivar used as check cultivar for proper maturity group. Soybean storage proteins have two major fraction, beta-conglyacinin (7S) and glycin (11S), accounting for approximately 70% of the total proteins. Because of their abundance, beta-conglyacinin and glycin are mainly responsible for soybean protein quality, thus the relative accumulation of these subunits is estimated by scanning densitometry. Our study confirmed observation that high-protein cultivars accumulated higher amount of glycin and beta-conglycinin. All this findings suggest that some of the tested genotypes could be beneficial in breeding programs aimed at altering composition of seed storage proteins.
