Lettuce transplant production is the most sensitive stage of lettuce growing, with substrate and its nutrient quality and air and water status being among key factors. Styrofoam containers providing root protection were used as a lettuce transplant production method in this study. The media employed included substrates having different physical and chemical properties. The following parameters were evaluated: plant height, leaf number, root length and plant weight. The results obtained showed different effects of substrate on the production of high quality lettuce transplants. Green substrate was found to be the most suitable substrate for the production of lettuce transplants of standard quality.
