Forest resources in Serbia, according to the number of tree species, their diversity and primary gene centers, are unique in Europe. The protection and enhancement of gene pool of tree and shrub diversity in Serbia is not a simple undertaking, and it requires a long-term working plan with close monitoring of its realization. Being of national and international significance, these resources require intensive protection and enhancement in situ and ex situ. The paper presents the previous works and models of conservation in situ - by singling out and management of national parks and seed stands, and ex situ – by the establishment of arboreta, provenance tests, progeny tests and seed orchards, as well as the programs of further activities in this aim.
