Organic production of berry fruits in Serbia

Organic production of berry fruits in Serbia is established on 690 ha and around 30 ha are in conversion period. The biggest part of the area is under raspberry (around 530 ha). Certified land areas of wild berry population are significant (710 ha). The production is concentrated in the area of western and southern part of Serbia, mainly in mountainous and hilly region. Due to agro-ecological conditions, agricultural practices are dominant in plant protection, along with application of fungicides based on copper and sulfur, which is also used as an acaricide against leaf and bud mite in raspberry plantations. The Willamette variety is dominant among raspberry varieties. Soil fertility is maintained by manure, and since 2009 organic, certified fertilizers became available. For the period 1995-2005 planting material from commercial plantations was used in plantation establishment, which had a negative impact on organic production sustainability. Organic, certified seedlings are not available in Serbia. On 20% of total area the following bioinsecticides are used: pyrethrin and rotenone in the control of aphids and blossom beetles and weevils. Fruit mouldiness is a problem because no adequate biofungicides are available. Since 2008 plantations of high yielding variety Polka are being created. All produced quantities of organic berry fruits are exported to EU and USA countries and to Japan in frozen state. Action plan for the development of organic agriculture by the year 2014, involves production area increase to 55,000 ha. The plan and demand growth will contribute future enlargement of areas under organic berry fruits.
