Results of long-term research are presented on the elaboration of hydroponic plant growing technique in the Extreme North conditions. Vermiculite substrates (VS) from the Kovdor deposit situated at Kolsk peninsula are introduced for using in a protected ground. Characteristics, features and peculiarities of exploitation of these substrates of the next generation are described in terms of universality, water and air capacities, absorbing properties, economic efficiency. VS are nor radioactive and have no detrimental impurities. They remain sterile during a whole growing period. They have so high water-absorbing capacity that in some cases watering is needed only once during 7-14 days. They have 74-85% interstices remaining, even if VS are completely waterlogged. VS are competent and they can be used for 15 years without replacement while growing hydroponic cultures. In hydroponic installations a volume of nutrient solution can be used 4-6 times due to VS. Thus it is demonstrated that application of VS in vegetable growing promotes realization of maximum potentialities of plants and organization of highly profitable ecological production of agricultural goods
