Efficacy of foliar application of potassium chloride salt in controlling powdery mildew on snake cucumber

Field experiments were conducted at Gezira Research Farm during the seasons 2004/05 and 2005/06 to evaluate the efficacy of three dosage rates of potassium chloride (KCl), 150, 190 and 220 g /100 L of water in controlling powdery mildew disease of cucumber caused by Sphaerotheca fuliginea. The results showed that a single foliar application of KCl was as effective as the standard fungicide treatment (Trical 25EC). Application of potassium chloride at the rates of 150, 190 and 220 g /100 L of water to run-off immediately after disease appearance significantly reduced disease incidence and severity up to 30 days compared to the untreated control. The medium and high rates (190 and 220 g) of KCl gave comparable yields to the standard treatment and significantly higher yield than that of the untreated control. The increases in yield were 42 and 60%, respectively compared to 79 % for the standard treatment. However, all rates of KCl when sprayed twice were superior to the standard fungicide treatment and significantly increased crop yield by 52, 62 and 82 % compared to the untreated control
