Use of acacia senegal bush fallow for sustainable farming in Nayala locality, southern Darfur, Sudan

An experiment was conducted on the gardud soil in Nayala locality, southern Darfur during 2001, 2002 and 2004. The objective was to study the effect of Acacia senegal tree re-spaced at 4x4, 4x8 and 8x8 m on millet, sorghum, sesame yield and to assess gum arabic yield, soil water content and land equivalent ratio (LER). The results indicated that higher yields were obtained under wider spacing and higher LER(s) were observed under this bush fallow system relative to mono-cropping. Soil fertility was not improved due to young plantation age; however, spacing effect was evident on soil water content as it was higher under narrow tree spacing. These results suggest that, this agroforestry system could be an alternative of the old traditional mono-cropping system. The study concluded that A. senegal bush fallow system may be promising for sustainable dryland agroforestry in the gardud soil
