Plant population studies and their impacts on grain yield of pearl millet (pennisetum glaucum (L.) R.Br.)
2011
Hussien, S.H.
A field experiment was conducted under rainfed condition for two consecutive seasons 2008 and 2009 at two different sites: namely Doka (as southern site) and Tewawa (as northern site) in Gedarif, Eastern Sudan. The main objective of this study was to investigate the influence of two inter row spacing (80 and 60 cm), two intra row spacing (50 and 30cm) on grain yield and it's components of two pearl millet cultivars (Ugandi and Ashana). The experiment was arranged in a randomized complete design (RCBD) with three replications. Plant height, number of heads/ha, number of productive tillers/plant, days to 50% flowering, days to 90% maturity, panicle length, harvest index, thousand seed weight and total grain yield were determined. With the exception of plant height and number of heads/ha all the traits under investigations were influenced by the treatments imposed irrespective of the site and season. Grain yield increased linearly with increasing row spacing. The highest grain yield (1404 kg/ha) was produced by Ugandi cultivar under 80*50 cm spacing which at the same time recorded the lowest grain yield (707 kg/ha) under 60*30 cm spacing. The grain yield was positively and highly significantly correlated with number of productive tillers/plant, thousand seed weight, harvest index, panicle length and days to 90% maturity. Furthermore, grain yield showed no significant correlation with other traits. Number of heads/ha was significantly and positively correlated with days to 90% maturity. The highest direct effect was exhibited by number of productive tillers/plant and followed by thousand seed weight. Moreover, number of heads/ha and days to 50% flowering had negative direct effect on grain yield. Ugandi cultivar was early compared to Ashana. 80*50 and 80*30 spacing seemed to be best option for raising millet under rainfed condition in Gedarif region
