The work presents the methodology of the development of climatic-site strata and their relationship to initial density of young tree individuals, which was quantified using Reinekes rule. Climatic-site strata are determined on the base of two main ecological variables: mean air temperature in vegetation season (from April to September), and mean precipitation sum in vegetation season (from April to September) taken from rectified climatic rasters. Stratification was performed using cluster and discriminant analyses. In total, 15 climatic-site strata were distinguished. The overall correctness of the discriminant model used for determining climatic-site stratum is 94.4% (it ranges from 87 to 100%). The distinguished climatic-site strata are closely related to other climatic and site variables (air temperature amplitude, length of vegetation season, aridity index, elevation, relative soil moisture, relative nutrient content in soil). The analyses showed that the quantification of density of young tree individuals performed with regard to specified climatic-site strata is sensitive to ecological conditions. The specified climatic-site strata can be regarded as an appropriate modification of ecological site quality classification applied in the individual-tree growth simulator SIBYLA.
