Efficiency of seed soaking with zinc sulphate solution for correcting zinc deficiency in corn grown on calcareous soils

Greenhouse studies were conducted to evaluate the efficiency of seed soaking with zinc sulphate (ZnSO4) solution for correcting zinc (Zn) deficiency in corn grown on Lop Buri and Lum Narai series calcareous soils from central Thailand. The treatments consisted of seed soaked for 16 hours in ZnSO4 solution containing 0.4, 0.8 or 1.6 percent Zn, a 2 mg Zn/kg rate applied to the soil (using ZnSO4) or a control (unsoaked seed). Results in both soils showed that seed soaking with ZnSO4 solution and soil-applied Zn increased Zn uptake, enhanced growth rate and increased yield significantly compared to the control. For the Lop Buri series, ZnSO4 soaking with 0.4, 0.8 and 1.6 percent Zn and soil-applied Zn increased corn yield by 35, 46, 58 and 58 percent respectively, above the control. For the Lum Narai series, the ZnSO4 soaking with 0.4, 0.8 and 1.6 percent Zn and soil-applied Zn increased corn yield by 35, 44, 59 and 107 percent respectively, above that of the control. These results suggested that seeds soaked with ZnSO4 solution is an effective method for increasing Zn uptake, growth and yield of corn grown on Zn-deficiency calcareous soils.
