Study on biological, ecological characteristics of mimosa pigraand negative impacts of its invasion in Vietnam

The noxious exotic weed, Mimosa pigra recently has heavily invaded some national barks and agricultural land in Vietnam. Up to 2008, the total area under mimosa cover is approximately 15,000 ha through the country. In order to effectively control of Mimosa pigra, this paper refers some h research findings collected from National Research Project on Integrated Control of Mimosa's seeds can maintain in mud and under land surface for long time they always comprise of over dormancy ones these can germinate immediately after water drainage. The seeds can be well germinated in high soil temperature (20-400C), high humidity (70%) but no water stand and non shadow, but young plants can grow well in almost eco-conditions. With tropical climate of Vietnam, Mimosa pipra can produce flowers and seeds around the year. There may has 1.8 flower bunches/ branch, each of them can provide 8.6 fruits and 14.3 seeds/ fruit. These infestation are causing a decline of plant and animal populations and preventing agriculture and fishing activities.
