Fallopia japonica – A PEST OR A VALUABLE USEFUL PLANT
2012
Peneva, A., N. Pushkarov Institute of Soil Science, Sofia (Bulgaria)
Fallopia japonica is a serious invasive weed species. It is spread via sexual and clonal reproduction with a fast vegetative growth and a huge vegetative mass formation as well as via intercrossing hybridization. Fallopia sp. control is very difficult. Herbicides, agrotechnical means, biological control agents are used. But this weed has some very important aplications. It can be applied successfully for biologic control of pests, for medicine uses, as an energy source, as a nectar source for honey bees, for a bioremediation of polluted habitats. Involving this huge vegetative mass in positive targets can rehabilitate this pest turning it into a valuable useful plant.
