In the conditions of the Republic of Belarus in 2006-2009 there was realized a comparison of the efficiency of diallel analysis and irregular crossing methods in the process of evaluation of combining ability of potato (Solanum tuberosum) parent forms according to a trait 'starch content'. There were examined 5 potato breeds (Albatross, Lazar, Adler, Svitanok Kievsky, Teteriv) which were included into hybridization in accordance with a full diallel crossing scheme. Two methods of the combining ability assessment (diallel analysis and irregular crosses) for initial potato forms were compared. Research results showed that substantial contribution into variability of starch content reciprocal effects and considerable distinctions between GCA (general combining ability) of the same parental forms in the conditions of their use as male and female forms, as well as SCA (specific combining ability) effects in reciprocal combinations did not allow to use the diallel analysis method for potato effectively. Use of the method of irregular crossings (which was based on a multitester topcross) made it possible to obtain more detailed and objective information. This conclusion was also proved by the results of efficiency of high-starchy forms selection: 50,0-66,7% of combinations obtained with participation of parent forms by irregular crossing method contained high proportion of high-starch hybrids. In course of evaluation od the combining ability by diallel analysis method only 38,5- 46,2% of combinations had high degree of high-starchy forms which were selected by GCA and SCA combination.
