Effectiveness of selection of the potato starchy forms in early breeding nurseries | Эффективность отбора крахмалистых форм картофеля в ранних селекционных питомниках

In the central part of the Republic of Belarus in 2005-2009 there was realized a study on possibility of selection of potato (Solanum tuberosum) starchy forms in a generation which was cultivated in a pot culture, as well as there was realized an evaluation of the efficiency of selection by this breeding train in early breeding nurseries. There were used 12 hybrid combinations as the material for the study; 7 of them were examined in 2005-2006 and 5 – in 2006-2007. Research results showed that selection of starchy forms in the first breeding nursery was impossible in the conditions of growing of the first generation in a pot culture on open area under uncontrollable environment. In order to avoid losses of valuable genotypes during the selection in the first tuber generation breeding nursery it was necessary to consider parentage of hybrid forms. In combinations obtained from crossing of two parents with high starch content, as well as a parent and a form with a high starch content in the nursery of the first tuber reproduction it was necessary to realize gentle breeding, taking into account a form of a tuber, eye depth, jacket type and colour. Selection by a trait 'starch content' in the nursery of the first tuber generation was quite objective and possible but under conditions of compulsory control in succeeding vegetative generations.
