Results of red fescue and crested dogstail variety trials

From 2008 to 2010, the Agroscope Reckenholz-Tänikon ART and Agroscope Changins-Wädenswil ACW research stations tested new breeds and recommended varieties of red fescue and crested dogstail. The evaluation of the varieties was based on systematic observations of yield, vigour, juvenile development, competitive ability, winter hardiness, resistance to leaf diseases and the ability for cultivation at higher altitudes. In addition, the digestible organic matter of crested dogstail was evaluated. No new breed attained results allowing for recommendation. Nevertheless, the particular characteristics of the new breed of red fescue FR 0315 may provide a benefit in certain cases and thus justify recommendation. Unfortunately, FR 0315 does not meet all legal requirements for trade yet and thus cannot be recommended at this time. All the varieties recommended so far are still recommended.
