Pomological characteristics and postharvest behavior of hallawy and zaghloul date fruits during cold storage

The present investigation was carried out during 2009 and 2010 seasons on Hallawy and Zaghloul date fruits harvested at full colored stage to evaluate their pomological characteristics and postharvest behavior during cold storage. The fruits were stored as attached to spikelet, separated fruits from the spikelet with their caps (separated+cap) or separated fruits from the spikelet without their caps (separated-cap) to determine the suitable way which reduce the fruit quality loss during cold storage at 0±1°C and 85-90±5% relative humidity. Hallawy fruits had higher values of rutab incidence, malic acid, peel and flesh total phenols and peroxidase (POD) activity and lower skin hue* and anthocyanin values than Zaghloul fruits. There were Insignificant differences between soluble solid content (SSC) and lyphenol oxidase (PPO) activity of Hallawy and Zaghloul fruits. he loss of fruit cap caused a high increase in the POD and PPO activities and resulted in fast fruit deterioration and loss of weight, peel anthocyanin content, soluble solids, malic acid and total phenol contents. In both cvs., the differences were not significant between the weight loss, rutab incidence and SSC percentages of the spikelet attached and the separated+cap fruits. The fruit attachment to the let reduced the loss of skin hue°, peel anthocyanin, malic acid, peel and flesh total phenol values and reduced the POD and PPO activities.
