Effect of UV-light and gamma irradiation of apple juice on organochlorinated pesticide residues

This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of UV-light and ã- irradiation on the organochlorine pesticide (OCPs) residues in apple juice. The use of ã- irradiation (60, o) led to a degradation percentage of 30% after a dose of 25 kGray, while the irradiation with 5 kGray was found to produce insignificant effect on OCPs residues when compared with the control. On the contrary, the use of the UVC for a period of 25 min led to 90% reduction of the most OCPs. Moreover, a 30-min increase in the exposure time of the contaminated apple juice led to almost complete destruction of OCPs after exposure to UVC-ray. Therefore, the exposure time was found to be significantly (P0.05) effective in complete degradation of OCPs when exposed to UV-light, while not effective in complete removal of the OCPs in the case of ã - irradiation regardless of the treatment dose.
