Identification of genetic sources resistance to Russian Wheat Aphid, Diuraphis noxia Mordvilko, in Iranian bread and durum wheat cultivars/promising lines.

Russian Wheat Aphid (RWA) is a serious pest of wheat, barely and other small grains in cereal-producing regions of the world. The use of resistant cultivars is an effective management strategy to control this pest. In this study, 125 genotypes including 13 durum wheat and 101 bread wheat lines/cultivars, one triticale and one rye along with oat as a resistant control were evaluated to RWA under greenhouse conditions, using completely randomized block design with three replications in two crop seasons. Five seedlings at each pot were considered as an experimental unit. Five aphids were placed on each plant at 1-2 leaf stage. Twenty-one days after infestation, leaf rolling and leaf chlorosis percent and their score based on qualitative scales were measured and used to screen the genotypes. Analysis of variance indicated significant difference among genotypes. Mean comparison of genotypes based on leaf rolling and leaf chlorosis percentage and cluster analysis using these percentage and their qualitative scores showed that 21 bread wheat and three durum lines/cultivars were identified as resistant genotypes. Triticale, rye and oat as expected were resistant genotypes. Oat with 14.5% leaf chlorosis and 26% leaf rolling was most resistant genotype and then Azadi was the second resistant genotype. Hammon, S-83-4 and Chamran were identified the most susceptible genotypes.
