Study of histopathological effect of environmental factors of Caspian Sea on Sturgeon Fishes

Heavy metal [lead (Pb), copper (Cu), Cadmium (Cd), nickel (Ni) & vanadium (V)] concentrations were determined in gill, liver, and cartilage tissues and in serum of Persian sturgeon (Acipenser persicus) and stellate sturgeon (Acipenser stellatus) caught in the Southern Caspian Sea- Gilan & Golestan stations. Samples were collected from 79 A. persicus and 79 A. stllatus specimens caught during 2001-2002. Analyses took place using Atomic Absorption (with flame) for tissue samples and cold vapor (flameless) for determination of Pb, Cd, Ni & V contents in serum. The mean age of studied fishes was 16.22 for A. persicus and 11.7 for A. stellatus. Mean concentrations of heavy metals in A. persicus were as follows; Pb: 0.78, Cu: 1.11; Cd: 0.22 for gill and; Pb: 0.97, Cu: 25.96 & Cd: 2.42 ppm dry weight for liver. In A. stellatus the mean concentrations of metals were; Pb: 0.67, Cu: 1.19, Cd: 0.15 for gill and Pb: 0.53, Cu: 21.01 & Cd: 0.52 ppm dry weight for liver. The amounts of Ni and V in fish tissues were not detected. Cartilage analysis in some samples didn't show metals in tissue as well, whereas cartilage analysis was no completely successful in relation to technical difficulties. Mean serum concentrations of elements in A. persicus were as follows; Pb: 6.54, Cu: 454.25, Cd: 2.69, Ni: 85.78 & V: 28.90 and in A. stellatus; Pb: 5.91, Cu: 391.00, Cd: 1.38, Ni: 83.27 & V: 28.16 ppb. In the histopathological study the main lesions were; hyperplasia, epithelial lifting, leukocyte infiltration, hypertrophy, lamellar fusion and lamellar aneurism in gill tissue; and vacuolar degeneration, bile stagnation, necrosis, and atrophy in liver tissue.
