The Gossypol content of cottonseed before and after processing in some of Iranian oil extraction factories

Gossypol is a highly active and polyphenolic compound found primarily in the pigment glands of the cotton plant, and it exists in both the Free (FG) and bound (BG) forms. Signs of gossypol toxicosis in non ruminants, preruminant, and the ruminants are similar and include labored breathing, dyspnea, decreased growth rate and anorexia. The objective of this study was determining the FG and TG among 3 major cotton cultivars (Varamin, Sahel, Bakttegan) of Iranian whole cottonseed (WCS) and their cottonseed meals (CSM) after edible-oil extraction. A total of 42 WCS and CSM (during winter 2002-2003) were collected from different oil extraction factory, located in different parts of Iran and analysed for TG and FG content. The mean of FG in Varamin, Sahel, Bakhtegan cultivars were: 0.288 ±0.008%, 0.278 ±0.031% and 0.294 ±0.022% respectivelly and the mean of TG in these cultivars were 0.3 ±0.008%, 0.322 ±0.010% and 0.326 ±0.013% respectivelly. þThere were no significant difference between the FG and TG contents of 3 major cultivars of Iranian whole cottonseed (WCS). The difference amoung the FG and TG content of different cultivars were not significant. The mean of FG content in the CSM for Varamin, Sahel, Bakhtegan cultivars were: 0.052 ±0.006%, 0.035 ±0.011% and 0.038 ±0.009% respectivelly and the TG content in their CSM were : 0.427 ±0.019%, 0.443 ±0.080% and 0.347 ±0.010% respectivelly. The FG content in CSM and thier TG content with each others showed no significant difference also. During proceesing with heat and moisture to produce an edible oil, FG binds to various seed components to become BG.As the result of this study showed the FG content in CSM is significantly lower than the FG in WCS (P0.01). þSo, to avoid gossypol toxicity , availability of both FG anf BG in feeds should be considered.
