The critical period of weed control in Winter chickpea (Cicer arietinum) under rainfed condition

Chickpea is an important crop in drylands in west of Iran, weed competition in order to yield reduction is one of main problems in this crop. Critical period of weed control is a period of growing season that to prevent of yield reduction, crop must be free of weeds. In order to determine critical period of weed contro I in winter chickpea under rainfed condition A two year (2001-2,2002-03) field study was conducted by using of complete randomized block design with three replication and natural weed infestation at Sararood ( Agricultural research station in Kermanshah), Two sets of treatments were used: in first set weed allowed to interfere with crop (WI) till 0 (weedfree check), 28, 38, 48, 58, 68 and 78 day after emergence (DAE) and then weeded till end of season: in other set crop Kept weed free (WF) till mentioned times and then unweeded till end of season. In second year these times changed to 0, 35, 45, 55, 65, 75 and 85 DAE due to climatical conditions. In first year, there was no significance difference between treatinents due to low infestation of weeds and only a WF period till 40 DAE was enough to prevent yield loose due to weeds at 5% acceptable damage. In second year a significance difference was observed between treatments because of higher weed density. Two quadratic equatio,ns fitted to data of WF and WI.In addition with considering 5% yield permited reduction, a period of 25-65 DAE was defined as critical period of weed control in winter rainfed chickpea and keeping crop weedfree and weeding during mentioned period is recommended.
