Bread wheat has less variation than its wild parents for for many important agronomic traits and lack variation for some traits such as resistance to certain diseases. Wild while parents generally are more variable for many important traits. Therefore wheat breeders attended to using genetic diversity of Ae. tauschii is production of synthetic hexaploied wheats. In this project 133 samples of Ae. tauschii collected from 15 different provinces were evaluated in the field. Then some of Ae. tauschii accessions were crossed with 10 line of Iranian durum wheat in the field. Subsequently, using embryo rescue hybrid plants produced and established using colchicein treatment. Results of morphological evaluation and geogharphical distribution of Aegilops populations suggested great diversity. Morphological and geographical evidence showed that in addition two main subspecies of Ae. tauschii which have a main center of diversity in northern areas of Iran; there is an intermediate form of Ae. tauschii which distributed in the mountainous area around the distribution of subspecies strangulate and expand the influence of strangulate genome more wider. In Iran climatic conditions producing hybrid plants between Ae. tauschii and durum wheat is possible in the field and gives acceptable results. In this project about 420 crosses were made and about 108 hybrid plants were obtained by embrio resque which is appropriate results with regard to the nature of interspecific cross. But cossidering to the problems of wild crosses and production of progeny plants using in vitro conditions in the midel of summer, maintenance and adaptation of progenies need more man power and appropriate cold conditions, should be considered for future programs.
