Integrated pest management and genetically modified crops – a question of the day of plant protection | Integrētā augu aizsardzība un ģenētiski modificētie kultūraugi - mūsdienu aktualitātes augu aizsardzībā

Integrated crop growing with its component – integrated pest management – is not a new method, but has emerged again with respect to the EU Parliament and Council Directive that determines the Community framework for sustainable use of pesticides for professional users that should be implemented until January 1, 2014. Therefore the keynote of the conference dedicated to this issue and to the 50th anniversary of the Latvian State Plant Protection Service was Integrated Pest Management is the basis for the good agricultural practice. Analysis of the options of implementing these standards suggests that a contrary statement should be considered, namely, Good agricultural practices are the basis for the integrated pest management. In this area, Latvia has accumulated theoretical knowledge and practical experience over many decades. The growing of genetically modified crops is being rejected by the majority of Latvian municipalities. The decision to impose restrictions on genetically modified crops by establishing the free zones of genetically modified crops in Latvia is in the process. The reason for this is the impossibility of co-existence of different types of farming, especially biological farming and beekeeping, as well as environmental risks, biodiversity loss, and different socio-economic considerations.

Integrētā kultūraugu audzēšana un tās sastāvdaļa - integrētā augu aizsardzība nav jauna metode, bet tā ir aktualizējusies Eiropas Savienības Eiropas Parlamenta un Padomes Direktīvas sakarā, ar kuru nosaka Kopienas pamatprincipus pesticīdu ilgtspējīgas lietošanas nodrošināšanai un paredzot situāciju, ka augu aizsardzības līdzekļu profesionālie lietotāji līdz 2014. gada 1. janvārim obligāti ieviesīs IAA vispārējos standartus. Šim jautājumam bija veltīta konference ar vadmotīvu Integrētā augu aizsardzība – Labas lauksaimniecības pamats. Analizējot iespējas ieviest šos standartus, jāsecina, jāsāk būtu otrādi - Labas lauksaimniecības prakse ir integrētās augu aizsardzības pamats. Šajā jomā Latvijas lauksaimniekiem ir teorētiskās zināšanas, iestrādes un pieredze daudzu gadu desmitu garumā un lielas iestrādes zaļajā ražošanā. Savukārt ģenētiski modificēto kultūraugu audzēšanu patlaban Latvijā noraida vairums pašvaldību un zemnieku. Pamatojums tam ir dažādu saimniekošanas veidu līdzāspastāvēšanas neiespējamība (galvenokārt, bioloģiskās saimniekošanas, biškopības), kā arī riski videi, vides daudzveidības samazināšanās un sociāli ekonomiskie apsvērumi.
